FAQs

Add the charcoal to your Big Green Egg. Stop pouring when it reaches 5cm below the rim of the Fire Ring. This will provide the right amount of clearance beneath your cooking surfaces.

Open a little indent in the centre of the pile for a firestarter to nestle in the charcoal. Light the corner of the firestarter, place it in the coals, then build a little teepee of charcoal on top.

Leave the Dome fully open for 5-10 minutes to get the fire going, then close the Dome for 10 minutes more to allow the internal temperature to build. Keep both vents fully open until the thermometer is 10°C away from your recipe’s target temperature. Then it’s time to put in your chosen cooking surfaces.

We’ve made a video to show you how to get a wood fire burning with clean combustion and less smoke development reducing its impact on neighbours and the environment. We use a top-down method for this, characterised by the cross stacking of split dry wood, on top of kindling and a few firelighters. The fire gets enough air in the start-up phase and the flue is heated quickly, which ensures a good draft and a clean combustion.

Burning tips

  • Use dry (15-20% moisture) untreated wood
  • Use the top-down method
  • Use firestarters but no newspaper or paper
  • To provide extra air, leave the door ajar when starting the fire
  • At the end, let the fire burn out quietly

How to light an RB73 Outdoor Fireplace

Depending on the size of your EGG and the temperature you plan to cook at, times can vary. However, a good benchmark is that the Large Big Green Egg with its Dome closed should stay lit for a low & slow cook for 24 hours with one batch of charcoal.

While you can happily add wood chunks or chips to the coals to smoke foods on your EGG, the Big Green Egg is designed to be a charcoal oven. Using wood to fuel it could cause the ceramics to become tainted, so is best avoided.
